Cleared privacy policy

Cleared helps you study for the CDL and other transport licenses: study guides, practice questions, a pre-trip inspection examiner, and videos from government agencies.

There is no account and no server

You do not sign in, because there is nothing to sign in to. This app has no database of ours, no cloud sync and no backend. Everything it keeps stays on your device, or in your browser if you use the web version.

What is stored, on your device or in your browser

  • Your practice progress: which questions you have answered right, and which you last answered wrong, for each pack.
  • Whether you have watched the opening, so it plays only on your first visit.
  • On iPhone, whether the app is unlocked, so it opens without asking the App Store each time.
  • On the web, your Gumroad license key, with the time it was last confirmed and the time it was last checked. The key is kept so the subscription can be checked again, as described below.
  • On iPhone, a small rating note, described under the rating prompt below.

That is the whole list. None of it says who you are, and none of it is uploaded to us. The only stored item that ever leaves your browser is the license key, and it goes only to Gumroad.

What Cleared connects to

  • On iPhone, the App Store, to show the price, to unlock and to restore. Apple handles the payment and tells the app only that the purchase exists.
  • On the web version, at carrierpress.com/cleared/app/, the subscription ($4.99 a month or $49.99 a year) is sold by Gumroad, which handles the payment and your receipt. When you paste the license key from your Gumroad receipt, the page sends Gumroad the key and Cleared's product number to check it. Because a subscription can end, the page checks the stored key with Gumroad again when you open it, at most once a day. If Gumroad says the subscription has ended or the key is no longer valid, the key is erased from your browser. If Gumroad cannot be reached, the packs stay open for up to seven days from the last good check.
  • YouTube, only when you tap a video. Videos are from government agencies and play from youtube-nocookie.com. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you tap one; when you do, YouTube (Google) sees your device's internet address, as with any video you watch.
  • Links you choose to follow, such as the federal rules at ecfr.gov or, on the web, the optional PayPal tip link, open those sites in your browser under their own privacy policies. A tip unlocks nothing.

There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no tracking software of any kind.

Deleting it

Deleting the app removes everything above. On the web, clearing this site's data in your browser does the same, including the stored license key, so keep your Gumroad receipt: pasting the key again brings the packs back. A purchase on iPhone is held by Apple, so reinstalling and tapping Restore purchase brings it back.

The rating prompt and Contact support

After something in the app has gone well, it may now and then ask Apple to show the App Store's own rating sheet. So that it asks rarely, it keeps one small note on your device: how many times things have gone well, the last two days they did, and the app version it last asked on. Nothing you entered is in that note, and it never leaves the device. Whatever you choose in the rating sheet is handled by Apple.

Contact support opens your own mail app with a message addressed to support@carrierpress.com. The subject line carries the app's name, its version and your phone's system version, so we know which build you mean. Nothing is sent unless you send it, and the app is not told whether you did.
